“We Must Come Together as Women”

Jamaica Chamber of Commerce Launches Inaugural Event:

Women Smart Networking Series

Kingston, Jamaica – September 6th, 2016 – The Inaugural Women Smart Networking Series launched today at the Richmond Park Great House, a venue where the Jamaica Chamber of Commerce now calls home – attributable to their recent relocation. Approximately 50 of Jamaica’s female top movers and shakers from a wide spectrum of private and public sector organizations gathered together in one room for one simple purpose today – to meet and greet each other.

“Networking is not just about connecting people, it’s about connecting people with people – and people with ideas,” a quote by Michele Jenae, shared by Winsome Gibbs, Manager of GK General Insurance, the Gold Sponsor for this event.

Katrine Smith, Business Development Consultant from “Development Synergies” facilitated the energetic session and incorporated several creative networking techniques to foster relationship building and resource sharing. The results were evident in the lively discussions and group participation throughout the two-hour breakfast event.

Numerous participants identified specific takeaways of the session, such as deepening their skill of creating a focused, strategic network, building stronger relationships, being more proactive in everyday networking, such as in their personal circles, as well as their professional networks. Participants also indicated enthusiasm to commit to next steps by sharing this information and knowledge transfer – and intended to encourage employees to networking more intentionally. Several workshop participants shared their intentions to leverage relationships by showing gratitude for and being bold in acquiring information and resources. Mentoring was also cited as an opportunity to serve – by seeking and offering knowledge for young women in various industries.

Remembering names and following through were two consistent themes that emerged from the session – and all participants committed to connecting with at least five (5) new contacts after the session. Ms. Smith emphasized the criticalness of this element of networking, and was reiterated by Ms. Gibbs in her Sponsor address.

The aim of the networking series is to empower women in business and provides practical approaches to build effective networks for professional and personal growth.

The networking breakfasts are scheduled on a monthly basis; the next events in the series are:

  • “Get Prepared – Practice and Do Your Homework” to be held on October 4th
  • “Work the Room – Maximize Your Effectiveness” – November 1st
  • “Work the Room – Be Your Own Publicist” – December 6th
  • “What’s Next? Follow-up and Build Relationships” – January 10th, and
  • “Online Networking – Get the Most of Social Media” – February 7th, 2017.

Closing out the session, Ms. Winsome Gibbs affirmed, “If you are not networking, you are not working!”
